Prologue
“Run! Run now Alice!” the figure clad in black bellowed at the top of his lungs as he shut the door behind her. Silence fell around her as she fell to her knees in the dark room the only light coming from the red syringe glowing in her hand, staring at the capsule a single tear fell down her cheek at the thought of everyone who had given their lives to save hers and this red glowing syringe that taunted her. She unclipped her side arm from the pouch on her belt and brought it to her chest; it was in the style of a old fashioned revolver it was commonly used in movies all the way back to the last millennia in 2000, 499 years later weapons that used material bullets were outdated. It had been passed through her family for generations but the magazine and loading mechanism had been adapted to take on and fire energy pulse cartridges, however inefficient the antique was though it packed a big punch. Alice loaded 6 single cell energy shots into the loading mechanism and held the gun facing the next door, technically it was impossible to obtain single cell energy shots as all weapons just used the standard cartridges but these were specially designed for her gun alone. Prologue
Slowly getting onto her feet she made her way to the console embedded into the wall after hitting 3 buttons on the keypad the doors flew apart revealing a horrific warzone comprised of 3 different factions “my god ........ It’s already started” she whispered fear slowly creeping into her voice. After a few seconds of watching the carnage unfold in front of her with blood, body parts and metal flying in the air she immediately dashed left, her grasp on the syringe tightened as she sprinted along the side of the complex with all her might. “Alice over here quickly” after hearing those faint words she turned to see a human 3 times her size standing on top of a truck, he was also dressed like the man who saved her he wore a black trench coat and a black tinted helmet but unlike the one who saved her he was piloting a sort of robot skeleton that fitted around him extending his arms reach and leg length with that of the robots it was called a “Skull” it was designed for labour workers to move around heavy objects that would normally take a forklift to carry but this had been modified for ranged combat and on the robots left arm was 6 inch energy round precision sniper rifle, beams of light erupted from the nozzle cutting through the charging enemies. She couldn’t tell if they were the GM’s or the Afflicted she couldn’t turn her face to check she just kept running ignoring the death that surrounded her.
She leapt with all her force into the back of the truck landing on someone as the syringe fell from her grasp, the truck took off at high speed away from the battle field she looked up from the body she was laying on to see the man wearing the Skull standing in front of her holding a microphone “All units fall back to rendezvous Alpha Bravo, live to fight another day” his booming voice reverberated through the van and speakers her admiration was shortly interrupted by a groaning sound from beneath her she immediately looked down as a chill froze her solid. NO why this? Why now?
Chapter 1: The wall
Mercer was an anti-social, quiet, self doubting and hating 15 year old boy he had no aspirations or particular dreams apart from that to find his place in the world, he was not fat nor to thin neither was he too short or to tall, he was never bullied but never had a lot of friends. He was average guy who lived an average life and to him it was boring and meaningless. He had dark brown hair that was messy and uncombed sometimes his fringe would cover his front right eye which had a blue, grey colour to them like a cloudy sky however they were always half closed as if he was . “Pssst hey Mercer wake up class is nearly over” Mercer stopped staring out the window and looked over at Ganta one of his few friends as his fringe moved down and covered his right eye leaving his half closed left eye staring at Ganta void of expression. “Jeez man I can’t tell if you’re half asleep or half dead and that goes for everyday.” Unlike Mercer Ganta was a very upbeat person but Mercer was his best friend since they were kids and he never left his side because of this people avoided Ganta which he didn’t care about but Mercer felt like he had deprived him of better friends and punished himself inside about it and added it to his list of failures. Ganta was the same age as Mercer with the same build and height, his hair was a Dark blue he had Dark blue hair all his life and nobody was sure if it was dyed regularly or he was born that way, whenever anyone asked he would just laugh and give them a wink, his eyes shone a dark Hazel and like Mercer his main interests are that of the Virtual world and video games. Mercer turned his head back towards the window and looked out onto the sun glistening off the ocean. Their school was situated off the east of England at ground Zero of the Crimson Crisis or what people commonly refer to it as “The day of the CC” the day that shook the entire world had left a gaping hole in the side of England which later was flooded with water. The government thought it best to build a school there as a symbol of new coming from old this was meant to raise people’s spirits but that would need more than one expensive school. Nobody knew what caused CC or why it happened but right after that some people underwent horrible mutations caused by CC they became known as the Afflicted and could no longer be classed as human beings the Afflicted where marked as outcasts all around the world. A large portion of the Afflicted decided to rise up against the humans using their mutations as weapons some were shown on the news and their faces didn’t even look human they came in all different forms, some could fly, some had massive sharp claws and some even had teeth bigger than their heads but they all had one common feature their skin. It was charcoal black with red pulsating lines covering their skin they started to attack people and rob stores so to combat these menaces the world leaders got together and made the GM’s a Military police organisation meant to bring peace to the world they had the full right to peace whoever they wanted and abused this power so with the people were faced with a choice continue being attacked by the Afflicted or have the GM’s protect them while they “keep order” and extort them.
They chose the GM’s and the GM’s got greedy and became Oppressive but people just did what they said and lived under their protection and cruelty. “So after we are done here me and john are heading over to Virtual Intensity want to come?” Ganta said in a low hushed tone trying not to be over heard by the teacher as he was finishing his lesson. “Virtual Intensity” was a 2449’s version of what they called 500 years ago an internet cafe except this was for using the “Box” the Box is a machine that puts you in a virtual reality that looks and feels real in every aspect by connecting with the 5 senses, sigh, smell, sound, touch and taste it had revolutionised gaming and were very popular but were tremendously expensive and took up a lot of room because of these two facts it was extremely rare for someone to have a private one unless they were very rich so the only way a normal person would be able to get on one was through the shops like Virtual Intensity. Without taking his eyes of the ocean Mercer replied in his usual half bored tone “ I Can’t I’m doing so more work with Mr Wing after school but thanks anyway” after Mercer said this the final bell went and everybody got up and rushed out of the class room to catch the tram that ran from the tiny island the school was built on to the mainland it was the only way to and from the school unless you can get a helicopter from somewhere but the GM’s restricted their use for the military only. Ganta stared at him for a few moments before a look of anger rushed over his face he stood up and slammed his fist down as hard as he could on the table creating a loud bang sound. “Are you Crazy? That’s a death wish even you don’t have that much luck!” Mercer didn’t even flinch but after a few seconds he slowly grabbed his bag from under the desk and walked out the classroom shortly followed by Ganta. Mercer pushed his hair to one side so he could see properly and said in his calm tone “It’s the only way to escape the GM’s and their constant restrictions they took are freedom and I have no parents to worry about me besides it could count towards 70% extra credit to my History and there’s only 5 of us so we won’t attract much attention and if we did run into trouble I have my sword” Mr wing was well known for his after school work as he would take students beyond “the wall” The wall was a huge barricade set up by the GM’s separating the Afflicted from the Humans It was constantly manned a lot of battles took place their day and night if anyone that wasn’t a GM Afflicted or otherwise would be shot down on the spot.
Mr Wing could get across through contacts and would conduct research on the Afflicted but students must acknowledge that if they go there is a possibility that they would die so only those that didn’t fear death and those who were seriously bad at history would attend Mercer however found it exiting and had been going along for a while now with Mr wing and his group helping to protect students who can’t protect themselves and had some every close calls but always managed to get out alive thanks to his excellent sword skills he had a love of swords especially when dual wielding and had gained awards for top swordsman of the school. Mr Wing even went to the extent to employ Mercer but they never told anyone. “Then I’m coming too not gona let you run and get yourself killed without me”
“If that’s what you wish then very well, I’m not going to stop you” They walked the rest of the way from the class room to the roof where Mr Wing was waiting with the other students. “Ah! Mercer you made it splendid I have your equipment here” Mr Wing handed him a large black suite case that had a 10 digit lock with a finger print scanner as well as 3 key locks. Mercer noticed the 4 students in the back ground shift uncomfortably and overheard some of their whispers which were comprised of “what’s in there?” “Something important I bet” “why is HE coming?” “I don’t know ask sir” Mercer then turned his attention to Mr Wing and who hid his expression behind his glasses “so when do we set off?” Ganta remarked to break the awkward tension. As Mr Wing introduced everyone Mercer fiddled with the suite case after a few minutes it opened and what was inside was a black cloak and two Kanata’s with a bandolier which made an X shape on his back the two swords fitted into them and the cloak went over the top to hide them. By the time Mercer rejoined them where set to head out everyone had changed out of their school clothes apart from Mercer who just put on a cloak. One of the students stepped up to Mercer and yelled at the top of his lungs “WHY THE swamp ARE YOU HERE? YOU GET GOOD GRADES DON’T YOU?” At that point before Mr Wing could even step in Mercer had drawn both swords and where placed around they students neck in a pincer shape “I’m your protection so how about you show some manners and apologise for that and let us be on our way hmmm?” Mercers voice pierced the cool wind like an icy spike nobody moved or said a thing the student caught in his pincer formation took a gulp that cut his throat on the sword a bit and in a shaken voice replied “I.......I’m.....S-Sorry okay?” immediately Mercer returned his weapons to its holster and turned around to walk away shortly followed by everyone else the trip on the tram was dead silent as was the walk from the tram station to the wall it was bigger than any building seen more miles and had spotlights covering each side of the wall “Mr Wing come take a look at this we may have a problem” Mercers calm and collected voice made everyone shudder as Mr Wing approached the doorway to the passage that lead into the wall he was sick over the floor the other students tried to see what was happening but Ganta wouldn’t let them pass as he too could see the horrific scene. There were no guards at the wall nor was there any sign of life the wall had been torn right in half and blood covered the road and walls bits of body parts lay scattered all over the place “Mr Wing something isn’t right here” Mr Wing throwing up his lunch long enough to look up at the wall he shrugged and in a voice gasping for air he uttered “what.......what is it?” Mercer stared intently at the wall and the body parts un moved by the scene in front of him Ganta had given up trying to hold back the students at this point as they stood there mortified. “The wall was broken in from our side and by the looks of things it was done with skulls and a vehicle” Ganta walked up next to Mercer and surveyed the surroundings “perhaps it was a rebel faction revolting against the GM’s like a militia group or something” Mercer looked over at Ganta his expression hadn’t changed all day, the side of his mouth raised a little almost making what could be classed as a smirk “well let’s go find out” The students who had been listening to their conversation ran back in the direction of their homes shortly after Mr Wing once he had finished apologising and throwing up. Mercer then turned to Ganta “what about you?” Ganta looked at him as if to say you idiot and replied with his usual upbeat tone “I’m not letting you die on your own now am I? Come on Mercer you’re going to need a lot more than a few dead bodies and some scattered limbs to keep me away” Ganta then smiled happily at Mercer and with a short curt nod they both disappeared off into the Afflicted territory lead by their hunger for curiosity.
