I've been reading up a bit, and until they settled in England, Vikings didn't use coins! I realize that coins are iconic and most easily understandable by the player, but as long as this game is meant to be educational, why not use ring money? Those were bracelets, undecorated or simply marked, which were chopped up into segments ("hack-silver") as necessary to provide the correct weight of silver or gold for payment. You could use bracelets as "dollars" and hack-silver as "cents" (although the divisions need not necessarily be hundredths, as it'd be tricky to chop up a bracelet that small; it would be the simplest conversion, though). I quite understand if you want to stick with the iconic coins, these aren't the most historically accurate Vikings after all, but c'mon, it'd be cool.

Though smaller purchases, such as bait, might have to be valued in eggs. Imagine purchases being valued at hundreds or thousands of chickens... In the event of adopting the chicken standard, would gems become yaks?

That reminds me, I really need to get on with spinning that yak wool I bought. (Not even kidding. I got the last ounce at the festival!)

Actually, I'm really liking the sheep idea. It could trail around after you along with your dragon, as a visual indication of membership. It could be your membersheep!

I made it for a Hallowe'en costume as the Fates (yes, all three of them at once), and it turned out to be perfectly functional.

'ALERT THIS VIKING HAS NO SHEEP! I'm going to have to arrest you on suspicion of non-possession of a sheep you have the right to remain silent.'
