I've tried everything from refreshing my browser to restarting my computer, so I don't think it's a problem on my end

Perhaps it's because the name that you are trying to use is already taken? Perhaps try thinking of a different name for your viking and trying that? ovo

I believe there migt be an error when you try to name your character with the same name as your profile name, I tried a random other name (I now have a girl viking with the name "randomname") and that seemed to work  |

Yeah changing to male doesn't work for me, as for the appearance, you can change the appearance in game, but not the gender sadly

I have precisely the same problem.  I've tried it in Firefox, Internet Explorer, I've tried rebooting the computer... nothing works. |

I got mine working using Jerre's suggestion. I picked a different name other than my user name (just added a letter after my user name and that worked) and didn't change any of the characteristics. You can do that once you are inside the game. Not sure what the boys can do to get a male though. Luckily I didn't have to worry about that.

I just tried that and it worked. Seems they just haven't yet implemented a proper message for "don't pick the same character name as your username".
